THE GONDOLA
The gondola is a Venetian rowing boat that was invented to navigate the unique waterways of the Italian Venetian lagoon. For hundreds of years gondolas were the main means of transportation and most common watercraft within Venice. The gondola is propelled by a person (the gondolier) who stands facing the bow and rows with a forward stroke, followed by a compensating backward stroke. The iconic boats had a significant role for hundreds of years in public transportation serving the Grand Canal.
Today, gondola's are primarily used to carry vacation tourists on waterway rides at fixed rates. There is also a general belief that riding the Gondola is one of the most charming and romantic ways of spending time with loved ones. And, the gondola ride is believed to bring closeness to families, couples or newly-weds who are about to start their new life together.
